The Fusible Link Thread [merged]

What do you guys think about this? I ran a fuse between where the link was at. Its the wire from the alternator to the fuse box. 30 kept blowing but so far 50 seems to be doing the job. Does get alittle hot though but i assume thats normal?

Good afternoon,
I have a 78. This afternoon I went out to start her up and it began to crank and died. I turned the key again and nothing. No horn, lights, gauges, etc. New battery. From the replies it seems to be a fusible link. While reading the tread, I see that if they are "bad" they stretch or are soft. The 2 that I have found that come off of the starter are a hard white/yellow plastic. There is no give or stretch. I have attached a pic of them for input. Are these the links?
Also, i am having issues finding the 1 off the alternator. Could it be inside the tube that holds all the of the wires?
Thank you to you all!

Fusible link
My fusible link down by the starter burned out on my 70 vette 454. I have been trying to find out what gauge wire to replace it with 12 or 14. Can anyone help out?
Thanks in advance
