Default broken C-Clip in Differiental

Greetings, pulled the cover off my rear end, as the driver side stub shaft could be removed without tearing apart, off car, Pulled the cover & found no c-clip,on the stub as it was broke in half. Found 1 piece but not yet the other. Visual inspection looks good from what i can see at this point. no bad teeth etc. I did measure stub end play & have .030" on driver side & .040" on pass. side. Why would a clip fail? should i find the other half & replace, or rebuild due to tolerances. P.S. I am on a budget...

I am in the same boat. I had a little more play. My snap rings were in place but one of the yokes was slightly mushroomed.

Turns out my case posi case is cracked. Trying to work out my options. Look at the last 2 pics in this thread:

GTR1999 will chime in.

Haven't done anything yet. I took those pictures last week. The diff is sitting on the work bench. Still figuring out my options. The posi case with that crack is no good. I cleaned off the the case with a little brake cleaner before I checked for cracks.

I haven't found any posi case cracks...yet. Also the stub shaft ends appear to be of original maching marks...

Studying the diff. rebuild thread by gary!

There is a wrong way to install the clip. On the edge of the clip one side has a radius the othe side is flat. You want the flat side facing in.

Unfortunately this seems to be a too common problem. My diff is slinging oil/lube really bad from those (diff) shafts. Also wondering what to do money/cost wise as this is really going over budget.

Put in A new clip and dont jack the rear of the car up with the tires on Alot. use A magnet on An antenna and keep raming not binding into the cavity mine picked up very small pieces of metal for about 5 plunges then it was clean .Maybe yours might pick up the half of the C-Clip,Good Luck

The snap rings are not all the same. I have them from 3 vette suppliers and they are all different thickness rings. This will affect endplay once the posi is setup.

.030-.040" is ok for an otherwise good diff. If indeed the diff is out then I would change them but if it's still in the car and you don't drive it too much you'll be ok until you can afford to do the job.

Gary, the diff. is out of the car. Perhaps I should shim the posi clutches?

If the posi case has never been out of the car then it will have cast iron shims and they will break trying to install them again. You may luck out and not break them but it's not worth the chance. This doesn't mean you can't do it though. PM if you want to go over the job.

the posi case has been removed, as i had new bearings & 4:10 r.p. installed a while ago. I could be wrong, but the clutches look like steel.

perhaps a p.m. should be sent, thanks.
