Ihave my engine back and am installing it. and installing it and installing it. :cry can someone please tell me how to get the last inch into the manual transmission. Just cant seem to get it into the pilot bearing hole. yes i did use the clutch tool. I've rocked it pushed it swore at it even kicked it. no help. i've pulled it out and tried putting it back in. the only thing i can think is the angle of the engine as it goes in needs to be flatter or steeper.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. 69 350 muncie 4 spd.
Disconnect the driveshaft and turn the output shaft with the transmission in gear.
It does have to be STRAIGHT.
I once helped a friend with this problem, after hours of not getting his transmission in I took one look and said "why is the throwout bearing backwards" oops. Get a fresh eye to look at it.
Tis may not be the proper way of doing it but can you get the bolts started and then just screw it in. I assume if it is just an inch that you are allready thru the clutch disk with the spline. Also I don't like the clutch alignment tools, check with your eye to if it is lined up.
Get two long bolts that fit in the bell housing, cut off the heads of the bolts and screw them ito the upper bolt pattern of the bell housing. Grease the clutch and transmission splines, and try installling it that way. I have had some bad luck pulling the transmission in with the bolts, the alignment was not correct and it wou;d not shift. Alright I'm armed and ready with
1-bottle jack
2-bolts with heads cut off
1-disconnected drive shaft
1-car in gear
1-properly installed throw out bearing
2-regular bell housing bolts to jam the damn thing in if it won't go
I'll keep ya informed as to the progress or damage :smash: :smash: :smash:
then some
thanks for the advice i'm sure one of them will do it!!!
The easiest way and only way that I install an engine with a 4 speed in a Vette is to install engine and transmission as one unit. This way you can be sure that you get the trans/engine lined up properly. It might make for a little more work because of removal the tranny, but guess what, it WILL go in the first time. I just did mine this way in the spring and everything went smooth.
Good luck
John
Thats it just disengage the clutch, no problem at all. I (we) Know your frustration. Have you been blessed with the trans gear oil dripping on you, that is a real pleasure, nice smell. Good luck. Roger
Thanks for everyones help.
