The other day had the vette out for a run, after a short drive with plenty of warm up time engine temp about 195 everything seemed to be running smooth and normal. Just had that urge to put her thru some heavy paces started with very hard exceleration in 1st gear tach to about 38-40 heard a loud pop from the engine follow what sounded like a very loud valve knock. Backed off and pulled over, knock went away and everything seemed to be fine so I continued to drive but now showing a little more reserve. Now sitting at idle engine back fires every now and then, just for clairification not after fire but back fire more of a cough through the carb. I suspect streached timing chain and also hoping no valve damage. Before I started tearing into the engine would like some imput from others.
How many miles on engine? I just changed my timing chain at 104k and was surprised it never jumped a tooth with the amount of slack. As to whether or not this is your case I will defer to the experts.
Pop the disty cap, put a breaker bar on the crank, and turn backwards to see how many degrees it takes before the disty turns. If it's a long time, (many degrees) the timing chain is done.
I'll probably catch some flak for this one, but I'm gonna say it. If you've got valve damage from breaking/stretching/jumping a timing chain, it will BE the very FIRST time I've seen a SBC do that. In 30+ years of playing with Chevy engines, I've NEVER seen a relativly stock V-8 hit a valve because of a timing chain. SOme of the really big cammed hi compression engines, maybe if the piston to valve clearance is tight, but a stocker? Nope.
