please explain gen11 one piece rear main roller block?
can someone tell me about the gen11 sbc roller blocks? i heard they are a direct swap in for us and they came from the factory with a roller cam. what years were they made and what did they come in? also does this mean i can do my 383 afr motor and direct swap a hyd. roller in place of stock unit? no retro fit kit? if all this is true why would u go with anything else?
GM switched to the new blocks in 1986, although there may be a few exceptions such as full size vans or trucks. The new blocks have the new style one piece rear main seals and used roller lifters as you noted. They have provisions for the roller lifter set-up so you just need 86-up lifters and parts. The crank is also 86-up specific due to the one piece seal, but retro kits are available to swap one and two piece cranks and blocks, but last time I heard it was only to go one way and I don't recall which, so check first if it's an issue for you. There were also some other relativly minor changes, such as, but not limited to, oil galleries, provisions for sensors, ect.
Like to add you can use the earlier heads/intakes also. The externally bolted on stuff (motor mounts, water pump, etc.) is interchangable, about the only thing you can't swap is the oil pan.
I got my roller block from a 91 pick-up, clearanced it for 383, and used a Scat crank, Brodix IK200 heads and RPM intake
Added cost is the only real negative. The aftermarket is geared towards the original sbc, so not everything is available, and the 86-up specific parts may cost a little more, depending on what you're getting. This issue is minor though in both size, and scope. If you are building from the ground, up, go for it. If you want to reuse parts you allready have, go traditional block. If you want a screamer or mild engine may also play a roll in your desicion.

you can't swap flywheels either...
on another note; my block is out of a 95 ish suburban, but tell that to someone I just say it a roller motor..
I cammed and rebuilt the old vette motor (better heads, etc) to put in my '58 pickup - on that one i say "it's a vette motor" - people seem to not realize that it's just a 350....
