Strike 1 - bought Flowmaster 40's. These would've been great when I was 16. Obviously I'm now too old for these ear-piercers.
Strike 2 - bought dynomax ultra flows. Was having my car valet'd the other nights. Could hear the guy drive off. The car sounded like a blow-dryer. Want it to sound like a vette, not a Lexus.
Not really wanting to shell out another $250 for mufflers and labor to put them on. Two questions:
1) will these dynomax's get louder over time?
2) this may sound a little "Bubba" but can you alter the mufflers to make them louder?
I've been through the same thing with sound on Vette's. Started with Ultra Flows, went to Flowmasters (for sale), now have chambered.
The Dynomax, Magnaflow, Borla, all have sound deadening material and will get louder over time with lots of heat. So if you only drive occasionally, you won't notice any difference for a long time.
Sound is personal and everyones tastes are different. It's hard to get Vette's to sound like a muscle car since the muffler is at the very end of the exhaust system. I'd love to have the same powerful, throaty, sound as my '70 Z that has Flowmasters, but the closest I've found is a 2 1/2" 4 muffler system from Allens. Lot's of compliments on the sound.
I got headers and Monday Im getting 2.5 exhaust and 2 chamber Flogmasters , to go along with my future 480/280 cam and upgraded heads.
I hope its loud then I hope its lopy!!!
I went with the Flowmaster Deltaflow 50's as I too am WAY past 16 and don't need to wake the neighbors in the next town. Combined with an "X" pipe, the car sounds very nice at normal speeds and just enough roar when you get on it. Very pleased with this combo.
hhmmm, i have some flowmaster 40's on my 79.....when i first had the new exhaust ran and 40's put on, the car was pretty loud.....after a month or so they mellowed out....i also had them put a h-pipe on the exhaust also, so i'm sure that helps.....
i'm 24, i like my cars somewhat quiet.....the vette sounds great, but is a little loud for my taste, but what's amuzing to me is my grandfather loves it....he doesn't think it's too loud, and told it me sounds great....
go with some magnaflows.....i think you'll like them

Yes, the dynomax will get louder over time.
I have used the dynomax ultra flows on many cars (currently have them on my vette and 540 ci Camaro) and I love them. I have noticed though that when they are first put on, they are very quiet. After I get them out and run the heck out of the car for a bit, they do louden up quite a bit. Also, I do notice that I have the packing material all over my back bumper after some hard driving after the initial install. No more packing material on either of my cars now that they have some miles on them.

You've tried a chamber muffler, and straight-through,..now it' time for the 3rd option, the reverse flow/turbo type. I'm 48 and I know exactly what you're talking about. The Flows attract waaaay to much attention and just don't sound right. The straight-throughs sound like the exhaust is muffled with pillows.
But the Dynomax Turbos,..just right! And yes, they sound better with time. They have that low deep muscle-car tone of the 60's & 70's.
I have Magnaflow's on my 78 and it sounds great.
I am running Flowtech headers, true duals with a cat on each side.
Without the cats it was a little on the loud side when I got on it.
It still has a nice rumble and I havent seen any performance hit from the cats that is noticable.
The big plus is that it actually passed emissions testing here in Wisconsin with flying colors.
So, did you reach a solution yet? I am going through a similar issue with a '72 I recently purchased. The former owner did a great job of just putting in a nice 2.5-inch system with unfortunately (for my taste) Flowmaster 40's. Way too loud and way, way, way too much resonance. I have almost considered going with a stock 2.5-inch muffler. Let us know what you ended up doing and how it worked out.

I'm 46 and I have Magnaflows for two years just starting to get a little louder. Not happy, want louder I have headers with dual high flow cats. I had these and they did sound the best.
From: Who says "Nothing is impossible" ? I've been doing nothing for years.
I've spent a few bucks too trying to get it right, first Flowmaster DeltaFlow 40's, that's not loud, that's f'in irritating. Now I have Dynomax Super Turbos, they do sound good at idle, heres a clip but they have an annoying resonance at about 1200RPM and an even more annoying "ringing" when I let my foot off the gas at higher RPM or in between shifts.
So I am going back to the only mufflers I have ever been happy with, MagnFlows
