Default Tech tips - Body and Paint repair Basics

In the Tech Tips there is an article entitled Corvette Body & Repair Basics. Sounds pretty good to me. I know enough to be dangerous. But I haven't painted a car in 25 years. A quarter of a century!
SO, whats the general consensus on this advice?

These are actually two different things.

Body repair : this is not in all that difficult, although there are some basic principles that you should use. A good basis is the Eckler's Book on fiberglass repair. A key to good succes here is to choose the materials that match with the type of fiberglass that you have. For example I have a 79 and this one can only be repaired with epoxy based materials. Failure doing this will result in a bad repair, maybe only seen untill to late.

Paint repair : There is a difference between painting the entire car or doing a part repair. When you repaint the intire car, it is best to take the paint completly off. This makes sure you start with the right products in the successive layers and avoid getting blisters in the future. You should get advice from a professional. My idea is that you can only spray the primers yourself as these have to be sanded. For the final coats, you'll have to go to a professional to get a good job. The key to a good paint job is the way and how good you sand (with black guide coat). So it basically is all up to sand, sand, sand sand sand and did I mentione sand
If you do a part repair, you will have to use materials with the coats that are already on there. Be carefull if you do a repair and end up going to the factory primers. Most of the times they need to be topped off with a suitable insulation primer...

I suggest you get a professional take a look at your car and discuss the things that you can do yourself and you can't if you are not comfortable.
