I was at my parents place last weekend and I started my car up and i heard a sweaking sound and then just excess noise. Opened the hood and it was coming from the altenator. I drove it back and parked it. The other night when I started it, it was doing the same thing but sqeaking every once in a while. When it sqeaks and the light are on the headlights and lights in the dash get brighter. I was wondering if i need to replace the whole thing or just get new brushes or what. Thanks.
Go to NAPA and get a rebuild kit, it cost $22.00 and has everything new. Easy to do, I just did mine over the weekend.
And the plus to rebuilding your own (if it still the original) is that you will still have your numbers matching alternator which is coded to your car.
Rebuild it yourself. Alternators are not the big mystery that a lot of people think they are. I just took one of mine completely apart just to clean the case.

Thanks. I'll have to check into that. I noticed they are around $160 new from Ecklers...which isn't going to break me by any means but it would be nice to have the original still.

I agree with the above replies----rebuild it yourself. It's a 2 hour job TOPS, and you will know it's done right. If for any reason you did want another one, a lifetime warrant rebuilt unit would be about $50
Good luck..
PS---I love Wakefield, Nebraska. My wife has family there, Spaulding, Greeley and Omaha. It is a beautiful part of the USA
