My speedo makes a sound too. But it does'nt always work and when it does it only shows about half my speed. It has never worked right in the 13 years I had the car, it actually went many years not working at all and then just started to partly work a couple years ago. I look at the tack for an idea of how fast I am going. I can't quite remember, but I think we switched the cable along time ago but it did'nt help, figured a bushing on either end was bad and was'nt all that concerned with it, many other things were deemed more important.
sounds like a speedo cable problem. i have had the same thing in my car twice and replacing the cable fixed it both times. the old cables usded to be a two piece set, now i think the replacements are 1 piece. kind of simple fix depending on how you do it. i unscrew it from the trans. then reach way up under the dash and feel for it right behind the speedo push the lock in and pull hard and it will come out. some people will pull the dash to do it but that isnt a must do for this.
Mine made a noise for a few hundred miles before dieing. I replaced the cable , didn"t help. I also put grease on the cable before i read i shouldn"t , ( they say the grease goes up the cable into the back of the spedo ) I assume it"s the plastic gears at the transmission, so i called to order some new ones. That"s when they wanted to know what color gears i had seems you have to match color gears to have the spedo accurate. I spent 2 hours trying to unsnap the spedo cable under the dash, then all of a sudden in 2 seconds it comes right apart, the tach was a lot easier to unsnap. pay close attition to how the cable is routed under the dash before you unsnap it ! If you unhook the spedo cable at the transmission you can atach a battery drill and find out reel quick if you need a cable or not.
