Default Remove 4 speed shifter

My 4 speed shifter needs to be reworked but I can't see how I can remove it without removing the drivers side exhaust. Can it be removed without removing the exhaust pipe?

Below: Are these two bolts the bracket, is there another bolt on the bracket?

Yes you can remove without removing exhaust.Remove the 2 bolts holding the shifter to the bracket and 3 bolts holding linkage to trans and drop shifter out the bottom.

The smaller bolt below will be a little more difficult to get to but it can be done.

You may be able to do it, but it will be much easier if you simply remove the driver side exahust. It isn't that hard and will save you time in the end IMHO. Also, once you re-install the shifter you will need to adjust the linkage by inserting either a gauge or a drill into a slot or hole in the shifter. This is difficult with the exhaust removed, I can't imagine doing it with the exhaust in place. I guess you could try it w/out removing the exahust first, but I think you will end up removing it anyway.

Thanks guys, I think I'll see about removing the exhaust pipe. There is just no room to work in there. Why on earth didn't they make the cross member two pieces that could be removed.

I was able to remove mine without taking apart the exhaust. Once you take the bracket loose and remove the transmission mount and the exhaust hanger there's more room.

There are 4 bolts holding the bracket in place, two on the back of the crossmember and two that come up from the bottom.

There are two or three bolts holding the shifter to the bracket.

Default Bubba was there before me

Well I finally got my shifter out. It was tricky but after removing the exhaust and disconnecting the linkage levers at the transmission, I was able to see the short bolt holding the shifter to the bracket. It can't be seen until you pull all three linkage arms downward. I don't really know why it's necessary to unbolt the bracket, I don't think you can actually get the bracket out because of the emergency brake bracket that's welded to the crossmember beside it. I did find Bubba had been there with a piece of wire as a cotter key on the reverse linkage. I haven't decided yet if I'll order a rebuild kit or get a Hurst shifter and linkage.
Picture of small bolts location that holds shifter to bracket and also the long bolt through the center of the shifter holds it to the bracket.

And Bubba's wire cotter key from the back of shifter.

Default Hurst Shifter quality ?

I got my Hurst Competition Plus shifter and installation kit from Summit yesterday. I'm disappointed in the quality of this shifter. My old shifter has larger shift rods then the Hurst. Also the rods are attached using a nylon bushing and a spring clip, NO washer behind the spring clip? Doesn't look good to me. Also it says to install a bushing (see picture below) in the arms of 74 and later Borg-Warner transmissions (that's what I have) and on the reverse arm to file off the tangs to make flush. Why didn't they do this? One of the adapters was made with the tang bent down and is useless. I think this kit could have been used. I'll call Summit Tuesday. Should I send it back?

Old shifter has larger rods.

One bushing is no good, also why no washers on the rod attachments.
The spring clips will just rub against the shift arms.
