Hello, Newbys to the 1970 Vet. Would appreciate your experience. Leaking Calipher. Specifically, how would we know if we should rebuild or buy new? I have read a lot of post, but guess I need specifically how to check for corrosion, and on what exactly.
Just like Duke said. You will be better off with rebuilds with stainless inserts. Then they will never corrode again. If you buy the regular rebuilt or rebuild them yourself, the corrosion will just return in short order.
My additional suggestion is to replace the break hoses that connect the calipers to the break lines. Just a thought.

If you don't know the history of the car you might already have sleeved calipers. Remove the leaking caliper and seperate the halves. The pistons and seals come out pretty easily. If the bores are rusty and pitted you do not have stainless sleeves. If the bores look good you might see the edge of the sleeve at the bottom of the bore. You can either rebuild with stock parts for ~$13.00 / caliper or buy O-ring kits from VB&P for more $. The O-ring seals are a better design and will prevent air entering the calipers because of excessive runout in the rotors.
If you need to buy a sleeved caliper you can get them at Autozone or you can get O-ringed calipers from VB&P.
Lonestar is the only licensee that can make brand new castings for the 1965-1982 corvette using the Delco Moraine logos. I've used rebuilt calipers from other companies and twice has to return them...while they were still under warranty, I got tired of replacing. New Lonestar calipers may cost a little more, you can sell your current calipers for cores to help offset the cost. With a rebuilt set, you will need to exchance your cores.
