Default Garage Floor Protection

I just got a new floor poured, and my 72 likes to :U puke a little antifreeze on occasion and weep :cry a little oil or grease. Other than a big hunk of cardboard, what's a good floor protector? :flag

I have access to pieces of good rug. I lay a large piece under the car and when it gets too dirty I throw it out. It also makes it nice to work under the car. Painting is bad. It tends to flake off after a while and if the floor is new it would have to age. Once you start painting you have to continue. Normal concrete is not affected by oil leaks and antifreeze. My main gargage floor is 18 years old and never effected by leaks.

Well, there are 2 routes here that work well.

1) 2 part epoxy "paint" does a good job of protecting the floor from spills & stuff and it cleans up easily.

2) Industrial vinyl floor tiles.

I have Armstrong vinyl floor tiles (from Lowes or Home Depot) in my workshop and I love them. They're SO much easier to sweep up and keep clean compared to concrete. The Vette section of my garage is going to get them as well...in a checkerboard pattern of course :)

I have heard that fires can begin by parking a hot vette over oily cardboard or oily rugs. Be careful.

I went to Pep Boys or Wally World, I dont remember which, and bought a big aluminum pan that can be placed under the car. It will catch just about anything that can leak from under your car. It will probably cover all the area under the enging to the rear of the tranny. Seems like it may have been $6 to $8. Pretty nice piece.

I agree with Dave's comment about the 2-part epoxy floor paint. I did my floor about 2 years ago with the kit by Sherwin Williams and it has held up beautifully. They can mix it in whatever color you like. I used two 1-gallon kits. I had them mix in some "Shark Grip" anti-slip additive in the second gallon. That's the one I used for the top coat and it gave a little grit to keep the finish from being quite so slippery when wet.

Yeah, go with the epoxy. It can be a little pricey but the first time you take a rag to that drop (or puddle) of oil and it comes right up with one swip you'll never go back to an "unprotected" floor.

Yep.. :yesnod: Epoxy's the way to go. Especially with the non slip top coat. This epoxy system is used on shipping docks where it takes a brutal pounding from fork lifts, and tends to hold up well. I've seen it last up to 5 yrs on a dock, at it takes three times the pounding your garage floor would take. Bare in mind, with enough force... it will chip, but is easily repairable.

I went the two part epoxy paint as well. It is 6 years old and still looks great! However you need a charcoal canister mask (organic vapors cartridge) when applying it or you will be high for a week!

The company that poured my floor 18 months ago, came back the next day and sprayed a clear sealer on it that makes it a BREEZE to sweep or wipe up.

Most concrete finishers should know what it's called.

Put a large plastic tarp down. They are cheap and easy to clean and they keep condensation away from the car.

I went with the large aluminum tray from Walmart.

My '70 would spill over anti-freeze each time I parked the car. I added an aluminum overflo tank and solved the radiator leaking. I'm still tracking down an oil leak:(

Get a radiator overflow tank, you don't want Fido or Puffy lapping up Prestone.
