Trying to set the timing on the vette. I just need to retard it 2 more degrees however since i have a mechanical tach, its hitting the oil pressure sensor ontop of the block. I was told that i can reindex teh distributor just a tooth and get that little bit extra i need. Which way should i turn the distributor for this?
Remove the cap, and mark where the rotor is pointing. Lift up the distributor and mark where the rotor is pointing when the distributor clears the cam gear. Use a long screwdriver to turn the oil pump driveshaft counterclockwise about 20-30*. Then drop the distributor back in with the rotor pointing about the same amount counterclockwise from where it was when the distributor came out. With it seated properly against the intake manifold, the rotor should be several degrees counterclockwise from where you started. Then set up the timing again.
another way is to pull the Cap , pull the distributor off the cam gear. Then find TDC, Compression stroke, on the #1 cylinder. Drop the Distributor back on the camgear , any tooth you want so long as you have turned the rotor to point to the #1 terminal before you drop it back on the Cam gear. Use a screwdriver to adjust the oil pump slot to work with your new index. Reset the Timing.
This may or may not be easier than LB66383's suggestion.
Regards..
PS I just noticed you understand LB66383 way..so disregard mine lest it may start getting confusing..cheers
