I have a leak on the hose that runs from the condensor at the front to the compressor. The leak is by the connection to the compressor. If I move the flexible hose near the compressor , I can hear the gas escaping from the joint.
My questions are:-
Can I replace this hose myself ? My Gm manual says its high pressure and I should take it to an air con shop.
Can I recharge the system myself as well?
The car has been retro-fitted with R134a
What light do they use to see the dye? I am wondering if I can get a bulb to check for other leaks myself
I have called around a couple of local shops and the going rate seems to be $150 to evacuate and refill the system plus the cost of the new hose (about $80-$100)
Any time you replace components on your A/C system, you need to have the system pumped out to remove any moisture. You also need a proper guage setup to measure the high and low sides of your system. So in a nutshell, I think you need to turn the job ver to the pros. Usually, you will have the system pumped down before you attempt to replace components.
Yes the pressurized system is under high pressure. When the system is not turned on there should be equal pressure on the high and low sides around 150 psi. If you have a leak more than likely the pressure will be down. You can either hook up a charging hose and bleed it down that way or you can crack the line that is leaking loose and let the pressure bleed down slow. You will have to evacuate the system when thru to remove the moisture and get it charged. It would probably save you a lot of cash doing the hose replacement by yourself.
