Help! I need to replace a rear wheel stud. Pulled the wheel and rotor off...and my Chiltons manual shows a dust cap...but my hubs ('72) dont look anything like the Chilton's picture. It all looks "one piece". The end is concave with with 2 protrusions on the inside. These may not be original hubs as the car has had quite a bit of restoration. Can't figure out how to get to the axle nut?? I assume there is one?? Any advice?
There is no dust cap. Removing the axle stub is a job. I've heard some folks say you can replace a wheel stud w/o removing the axle. If that is true, that is much easier. I assume you will need to remove the parking brake hardware for that to be possible.
I replaced my wheel studs when I replaced the bearings, so never tried to do it on the car.
R&R of the axle takes tools the average home garage does not have.
There are a number of trailing arm rebuild/replacement options available if it's time for new bearings, bushings and such anyway. While rebuilt trailing arms are not cheap they are not a bad deal if you don't have to tools to do it yourself.
On C3 Vette rear wheel stub axles, there is not exterior axle nut. It is located on the inside end of the stub axle, behinde the half shafts.
Look at shop manual or AIM for the car.
Also do a search of the forum threads for the appropraite terms, ther must be a gazzillion picutres of rear wheel stub axles etc.
I also am missing a wheel stud on my passenger rear wheel axle. When I eventually redo the tariling arm & bearings, I plan to install the replacement stud.
I should have pointed out the axle nut is on the back side under where the half-shaft bolts on. But, the axle will not slide out - it needs to be pressed out.
If you press it out, you should repack (or replace) the bearings and be prepaired to adjust the shims.
There is a special tool to press it out on the car, or you can remove the trailing arm and use a standard press.
i also thought i could probably knock out the studs/replace without removal of axle/hub...and now that you have told me what's involved... i don't know what to do..
i have chrome wheels and missing lug nuts look pretty stupid..so maybe removing the parking brake shoes willl allow me to replace "on the car". Wheel bearings, etc only have 1000 or so miles on them. but i'm cursed with being surrounded by idiots who overtightened the lugs...arghhhh
