Hey, with gas prices on the rise, that may not be the only one like that.

Hmm, thats pretty cool. There are a lot of guys running Turbos so that should eliminate the concerne he has about that.
what else might be an issue for installing a turbo on that thing? Space?

A very unusual conversion but, done right, could certainly make for a very good performer. Though they were strictly track cars, I've seen diesel powered stuff run deep into the 10's in the quarter!

It would be a lot of work, but I think it would be a very fun build.

Saw a 71 Monte Carlo at a local car show with a Cummis 24v Turbo out of a 1ton Dodge. Sounded strange but he could scoot pretty good. All that torque in a much lighter vehical isn't a bad thing.

Daaaaaamn! 48 - 55 mpg?! I might have to start brushing up on diesels... Oh wait, I live 2 miles from work, it would take longer to warm that SOB up than it does to even get to work.

man, I need to do this in a different vehicle for that kind of mileage. what kind of mileage did those engines pull in their original vehicles?

I would not laugh at diesels to much. I know that in the US you have not much experience with them, but in Europe we actually have more diesels running around that gasoline cars. Don't laugh at their performance, because the turbo's diesels perform very, very good today and the torque they produce is enormous. Some of them are equal in power to the gasoline engines without the added fuel expense.

the $/gal of diesel here is too close to the $/gal of regular (can anybody explain that?). his mileage claim seems almost too good to be true, but then all i have to go on is a buddy who drives a vw rabbit. he gets maybe 40-50 mpg, and it pollutes too.
besides, where is the hydrogen answer as promised by the tree huggers and others? or even a solar powered vette, never rains here? i guess it morphs to a battery/pedal car then.
uh oh . . . politically incorrect again . . . (and not laughing at deisels either!)

I like Diesels. My wife drives an '06.5 Jetta turbo direct injected diesel. That car can move. And we get 42MPG+ with it. One of the best cars we've ever owned. We'll be cruising it to Vegas for the weekend. With that kind of mileage we haven't really been impacted by high fuel prices either.

I'm waiting to see when someone will start selling a mid-sized or even half ton pickup here in the US that incorporates a turbo-diesel. I would go right to the dealer and buy one today if it existed. The rest of the world is a lot smarter than we are here in the US when it comes to diesel powered vehicles. Between the torque, mileage and longevity of a diesel powerplant they are far superior to gasoline engines.

I happened to be watching pimp my ride and they took a 66 impala and put a 6.6 litre diesel in it with an Allison transmission. The car ran on the veggy oil diesel and regular diesel. I forget the numbers on the car but the raced a lamborghini Diablo in the 1/4 mile and the impala won by 3 car lengths!

I drive a Ford S-max all day. I'm getting about 100km/7 liter of fuel. With a complete tank of 70 L I will go about 1000 km. Diesel is alott cheaper here than gasoline. (1.00 € vs 1.25 €)

The power is very good : 125 hp and something like 350 nm torque(don't know the figures exactly) Engine is a 1.8 l turbo diesel (monorail injection). The corvette will be faster but with fuel consumption around 20 l/100 km this will not be a daily used vehicle, just for fun.

Also it rarely smokes...

You might want to check if your state has adopted SEMA's custom car registration language. If so, properly registered custom C3's are already exempt from emissions standards.

btw... "diesel performance" is no oxymoron. Just look at what Audi has accomplished with them at Sebring and Le Mans. The only thing wrong I found was that dude thinks a 427 takes 7 seconds to get to 60.

I'd say that the Audi's (at least the serious race 1's) have it together, performance and fuel mileage, but I dont think that it'd go over too swell in a Vette for the street. Just my opinion. Peace,,, Moosie

Also, any hang-overs aside, the sounds of vintage BB Vettes hammering around Sebring on Sunday is much sweeter than most anything you'll hear (or in the case of the Audi's, not hear) during the 12-hour the day before...

That's what I need in my 03 Jeep Wrangler, with my 4.56 gears, both axles with Detroit Trutrac limited slips and 35" Goodyear MTR's I get a whopping 9mpg on the hwy with a 5sp manual tranny. I average from 125 to 160 miles on a 19 gallon tank depending how much I get into it.
