I have a 77 L48 that I am going to be either rebuilding or putting a new one in. If I go through the expense of a new one I am thinking about the crate fastburn 385. The one thing I have been told to check is the hood clearance because the 385 has a 1-3/4" increase at the intake taller than stock.. Has anyone heard of this motor in a c3.
Thanks.
Thanks Spedaleden-- How do you like it,, I am thinking it will be a nice motor with increased HP without having to get into the Trans and rearend.
My car is a 4 speed with a 2.72 rear end. The motor gave me more power but acceleration was nothing great. So I changed the rear end gear to a 3.55. Now were moving. The problem now is on the highway the motor is screaming trying to go 75 mph. So I changed the rear end gear back to 2.72. I wanted more power but I run the car a lot on the highway.
This winter I put a 5 speed in and changed the rear end gear back to the 3.55. The car is unreal. At 80MPH the motor is turning 2000 RPM's In first gear you can burn the tires off the rims. It's like a C5 or 6 in a C3 body.
For me just changing the engine to a fast burn in a 81. I would leave the original motor in it because of the gearing in the 4 speed and rear end. In a 77 depending on the gearing, that car has, it may make sense.
But from what I know now about 81's. If you change the motor I would also go with the 5 speed. Over drive is nice, but the gearing in the 5 speed is much nicer than the factory 4 speed. You will appreciate the motor even more.
Good Info- However I am going to leave it an automatic, hope that it turns out nice and be done with it,,, or are those famous last words,, likewise I enjoy driving the car on the highway.. Do you have the 385 with 385 HP?

Reason: add question
GM part # 12496769 and I added GM hot cam and 1.6 roller rockers. GM says its 425 at the crank but that is with no pullys and perfect conditions. I would say the motor is more like 380 at the crank. I am going to the dyno this summer. You have to change the water pump to a short pump. The one on the motor is a long pump and reverse flow. Your current fan won't cool. If you go electric fans and surp you can use the pump on the motor.
The angled plugs don't interfere with the headers.
i have a 385 FASTBURN with hot cam kit (GM claim 430hp on same config "zz430")
i have:
- 4160 holley
- 1/2" spacer
-stock 385FM intake manifold
- moroso drop base air cleaner
- stock 1979 hood
