The shop manuals hasn't been too helpful here...can the pulley be swapped with the compressor in place? I plan to install a Sanden or ND compressor sometime fairly soon, but I don't want to drain the A/C system right now, and I need to get a serpentine pulley on the existing R4.

It can be done but you may have to loosen the comp and tilt it up a little for the puller to fit in the space between the shroud and the comp.
I've not done it in a vette and my R4 is long gone so I can't go and look at the amount of room there is but going from memory I would say yes.

Sorry for the late response I was working on recovering info on a hard drive that crashed.
Most local parts stores will have the puller and the installer tools for you to borrow. I Use Oreilly's, I owne the puller but have managed to loose the installer tool. You will have to pull the clutch plate off and than you can get to the snap ring that is holding the pully and brg in place. I may have a drawing at home that I can scan and send it to you; it wont be vette specific but they were most all the same at that time. The puller is actually to pull the clutch plate off so you can get to the snap ring that is holding the pulley and brg in place.
Since we are both working in the same area of the car, ie compressor.. I would agree, I think (without the shroud) you would have plenty of room to get in there to pull the pulley.
Since you are in the area (under the hood), would you look at my post of today.. Need help.. where does the braces go.. and since it sounds llike you haven't unbolted everything there perhaps.. can you tell me if you have more than the 3 braces I have bolted on.. I can't for the life of me figure out where my extra one goes..
Yes, it can be done without blowing the a/c charge. You do need the puller tool for the front clutch plate and they can be testy to get back in occasionally. The more clearance you have, the better.
