When I was younger first starting to drive and living at "home" we had a radiator shop just across the alley from us. Hung around back there quite a bit. Big part of the business was opening up the radiators and rodding out the crud. Lot of white lime deposits. I had always though our Chicago tap water was pretty good but the guy always recommended distilled water. All I ever use, now.
Actually, the more coolant (anti-freeze is really a better term) in the mix, the less efficient heat transfer will be, and that's why many racers run straight water and additive in warm weather. ...some of them do it because they're just cheap.
I am going to check all the things mentioned
1. Gage reading- can you rent the gun to read temps?
2. Seals
3. Fan clutch- whats the best way to test this
4. 50/50 mix with distilled water
Question: Is there a product that I can flush my radiator system with to get rid of all the white deposites?
I am going to hold off on the electric fans until I have finished all the above.
I don't remember the product number, but the chevy dealer will sell it. It is a powder you dump in the cooling system, run it for 30 minutes or so, rinse, run, etc...takes a couple hours to get iit done, but the best stuff out there
