Default Odometer ??s

Hey guys,

I have a few questions about my Odometer. It is stuck at 25800 and hasn't moved since I bought it. What is going on here? What do I need to do to get it rolling again? I have had the car for 4 years and haven't thought to fix it b/c I don't think it will really make a difference, ya know? Either way, I'm ready to fix it now and would like to know what I have to do to get it rolling again.

Thanks guys,

Josh

Assuming the speedometer works it usually means that the odometer drive and/or driven gear is stripped. Removal of the speedo head and a trip to a repair station is your next step.

I take it, it's nothing I can fix? What is involved in getting the speedo head off? Are you refering to the actual Speedometer?

Thanks,

Josh

Easiest way that I have found is, disconnect battery, remove steering column, disconnect the speedo and tach cables (assuming it is a '74 or earlier, just speedo for '75 and up), remove the fasteners holding the LH instrument pad in, GENTLY slide the pad back and remove all the lamps and wiring. You can then remove the back cover of the speedo/tach and remove the speedo. On reassembly just reverse the procedures. If you do this when you are ready to reinstall the panel, I will post the wire colors and where they go, or you can buy a wiring schemetic from Don Olson, who I believe posts here.

Mine had the same problem. I search for speedo repair, speedo parts and posted a thread on the parts wanted for sale looking for a speedo. I compared prices for repair by someone else, repair myself buying parts or replace the whole speedo.
I found the cheapest way to go was replace. I bought one from Gary Dale at Corvette Forum. Good price better than ebay. Work great. Looks great. Gary was very helpful and great to deal with.
Contact Gary he might have one for your car.

I can send you a document I downloaded that gives specific instructions with pictures on how to replace the drive gear. Send me your email address.

BTW, I found the instructions on the forum so you can also search for them if you like.

What year is it? If it's a drive gear that needs replacing that may be a short term fix. If the drive gear is stripped, quite often the first worm gear on the magnet assembly is also chewed up. Best long term fix is to have the frame and magnet assembly rebuilt and a new second worm gear installed. If that's all it needs, 5 days or less and around $90.00.

It's a 1975 L48. I have no clue what is going on. I've never opened it up, just disassembled the dash a few times. I think the best thing would be to replace, but if I have a chance to fix, I might have to try it.

My email address is jmbcorvette@yahoo.com.

Thanks guys,

Josh

Yes, you can fix it your self. There is a xlnt post, with pictures, in the archives here. Parts are available from numerous distributors. But, it is a major pain in the butt. If you already had your dash apart, I would say to go do it. If not, I probably wouldn't do it.
