just went for a night ride tonight..the car went fast like a light and smooth like a breeze...before going back to garage i filled some gas in, when i tried to re-start the engine...nothing. like if i had the battery dead (but actually it should not be dead because an hour before it was strong and full of charge to fire the 406 engine...) i let cool down a bit: again, nothing...until a few guys pushed me along a road and it fired immediately
my opinion: maybe the alternator didnt work and the lights drained the battery in one hour? or some problem with the starter motor? with the ign on the feeling was like the battery was flat dead though.
i'd appreciate your opinions here.
i know some people have had this very same malfunction but cannot find the threads right now.
When you got back on the road after the push start were the headlights bright? If they were your alt. was probably working.Might have been a solenoid suffering from heat saturation or just a bad battery.
i just rtied to start the engine this morning...the battery was flat, so this was the very reason last night i had to push my '77, so i checked the alternator and the belt was loose...question: as i have the sepentine sistem (alternator/power steering/etc) how come, if this is the reason, a loose belt can generate a malfunction (if this was the cause) in the alternator but i didnt notice any problem in the power steering or elsewhere? thanks/Giu
Get the battery tested. I have had two instances in the past with batteries that worked fine to start the car -- turned the car off, came back five minutes later, and it was dead. Barely lit the dome light. Got it jump started, drove it home, but in a new battery, and no more problem.

The alternator pulley is usually smaller and has less belt contact than the water pump and PS so it makes sense it would slip first.
