Default I know it's been asked before but....Auto to 4 speed switch?

How difficult would it be to switch an 81 automatic over to a 4 spd. What costs should I expect and can it be done?

Crossmember change over, possibly some exhaust mods, center console plate. If it were me I wouldn't go with a four speed, thats just not enough gears, go with at least a 5spd.

I'll second that. Why stop at four gears. The Richmond 5 speed is a pretty simple swap. The removable crossmember on mine makes things much easier than it would be. My car was originally a TH400 car. I changed to an M-20 14 or15 years ago. I then put the Richmond in about 5 years ago. The hardest part of the first swap was hanging the new pedals. Because the 81 has a different crossmember, I'm not sure of what you will need to modify to support the tranny at the crossmember. It should still be fairly simple though. The only down side to all of this is the cost. Not only will you need to get a different pedal assembly, you will also need a different console trim plate, clutch linkage brackets, clutch linkage, clutch, bellhousing, flywheel and of course the tranny itself. There are also about a dozen things I forgot to list. If you ask me, it's still worth it.
