Default Big block Water pump

I have a '77 with a 454 big block in it. Big block built from bare block and installed in 2001. I don't have much specific info on it. It has a leaking water pump and I want to install a high output Edelbrock water pump.

Question is: I can measure the distance from the block to the pully shaft on the old pump and this number is listed on the new parts. Is that the only consideration? Are all Chevy Big Blocks same as far as water pump hook up? Don't want to order it and then not fit.

Not sure if you will be able to verify the old/new measurements without both pumps. I didn't see any dimensional info in the Edelbrock catalog.

Have a look at Edelbrock #8854 or #8864. The catalog claim they are for 71-74 BB Corvettes. These may fit your application if your block is from that era. I just ordered one from Summit. $275 and of course back-ordered!

I think the block is not from a Corvette. Just a Chevy big block. Are they all similar/same for water pump mount holes, etc..?

I understand there was a long pump and a short pump. As for the years, particulars, I am unsure. I wonder what the new 502's etc come with. Mine is a 69 BB, but I have a 73 fan blade, as it had a better configuration. I will have to measure mine, but I think it required the longer pump.

I think those are reverse rotation....

Here's what I see on the Edelbrock site:

Short-Style Pump (5/8" pilot shaft) #8850 #8860 #88502 #88504
Fits all 1965-68 B/B Chevy passenger cars, 1966-72 trucks and 1969-70 B/B Corvettes. Has 3/4" ball/ball bearing. Dimension from block surface to hub: 5-3/4". Inlet diameter: 1.95".

Long-Style Pump (5/8" pilot shaft) #8851 #8861 #88512 #88514
Fits 1969-87 B/B and some 1988-91 heavy-duty trucks with Mark IV engines. Does not fit Corvettes or trucks over 1-ton. Includes 3/4" ball/roller bearing. Dimension from block surface to hub: 7-5/16". Inlet diameter: 1.875".

Short-Style Pump (3/4" pilot shaft) #8852 #8862
Fits all 1971-74 B/B Corvettes. Comes with heavy-duty 3/4" ball/roller bearing. Dimension from block surface to hub: 5-3/4". Inlet diameter: 1.95".

Use a short pump for short pump pulleys and brackets, long pump for long pump pulleys and brackets.

All original big block corvettes had short pumps. If you want to run a long pump you will have to cut up the front cross member to clear the pulleys.

I run an Edelbrock Victor short pump in my 70 big block.

I understand you have to cut the front crossmember for some serpentine systems, but do you mean you have to do this for the OEM/Stock Long H2O Pump?

In 1969 most Chevy's moved the alternator to the RH side (pass. side) which meant moving the water pump flange forward. Corvettes didn't have the room so they stayed with the driver's side alternator/short water pump config used on Chevy's in 68 and prior.

There are only two basic water pumps for our Vettes,..a big block and a small block,..both are the short style. Some time in the early 70's, Chevy went up to a 3/4" shaft,..up from 5/8",..which is why fans and clutches won't fit from one to the other.

Cutting up the frame? You're kidding right? Just get the correct stuff.

Also, I've good luck with Stewart aluminum hi-flow pumps. I think it's better than the Edelbrock and costs less ($175). Here's the pump I put on my 73 BB:

Id never recommend cutting the frame but if you look on the web lots of people do it for what ever reason. Ive even heard from someone who said they took to the front crossmember with a hammer and a gas torch!

Iike I said I run a short pump and it fits perfectly.
