Default My 1978 SA just got jealous

I've been putting so much time, attention, and $$$$ into the 1972 recently, that I've been pretty much neglecting the 1978. Well, it spoke up this morning.

On the way to work I wonder "What's that funny sweet smell?" Hmmm, seems the carpet is damp under the passenger floor mat  :bb I guess this is heater core #2 this year, as I'm in process of replacing the heater core in the 1972. I'm going to get pretty good at heater core replacement, I think  :cry :cry :cry :smash:

Just venting my frustration :nonod: :boxing Something tells me repalcing the 1978 core is going to be a little more involved than the 1972, as the entire freaking dash is 1 large peice :mad

If you don't need the heater right now, just unhook the heater hoses where they attach to heater core, and connect them together with a piece of pipe. Then you can still drive the car, just won't have any heat.

That got me thinking, isnt' there supposed to be a hot water shutoff valve on the later C3's? I see one there, looks like it operates on vacuum. At what setting is the valve shut off? There's enough heat generated from the engine compartment to heat the car anyway

The factory heater core shut off valve operates off of vacuum supplied when A/C is turned on. The vacuum shuts off water supply to heater core, even with this in the 'off' position, you'll still have coolant in the heater core which can and will leak, from the return hose side, so only way to stop the leak is to close off both hoses to the heater core. I would not trust that the factory vacuum operated valve completely stops ALL coolant flow to the heater core anyway.
