Default 1980 Temp Gage Question

What is the 200 deg mark on the 1980 water temp gage.

There is a 100 deg with a thick dash on the gage to the far left
There is a 200 deg but is the dash that corresponds to the 200 the thick dash just to the left (north west) or directly above and centered on the gage (narrow dash)?

I think I have been worried about my engine temps for no reason.....hopefully

I think that will be different from car to car.I do know that if you put a 68 ohm resistor between the green wire at the sender and ground ----the dash gauge is supposed to read 220 degrees. The resistor at Radio Shack is under $1.Hope this helps
Edit -Sorry

EDIT--Sorry I'm getting old.Its 68ohms should produce a reading of 215-220----136ohms should produce a reading of 150-155
Gosh I hope I didnt give this info out in other posts with the wrong numbers.I'll have to go searching.

I think you want to refer to the thick dash to the left. I noticed on my 78s the temp says 200 and the thick dash is above it. The 79s read both 200 with the thick dash to the left or 220 with the thick dash above.

Ya got me curious, had to go out and look.....

Mid year 78 production:

Mid year 79 production:

Late, late 79 production:

I figure you got number 3. It seems that the thick dash always refers to the numbers on the gauge.

Default Temp gauge

Hi Darrel

I have an 82CE and have struggled with the same question you have. I sort of solved the problem, after spending $700. at my local GM dealer. I just bought the care last year and I was watching the temp go up over that thick line which appears to be indicated by the 200 degree mark. It always goes over by about the same thickness as the needle, maybe a little more. In hot weather, it goes about double that distance over that thick line. I assumed my thermostat was stuck so I had GM check it out. They indicated that my rad was possible bad inside etc etc. Not wanting to take any chances on (42,000 miles, original engine) I took their advice and installed a new heavy duty rad, new thermostat and new upper rad hose... when I took the car home, the temp guage was going to the exact same location. All this to say, I believe the 200 degree mark must be the smaller line at the 12 o'clock position.

Take care
Carl
