A few weeks ago, I posted regarding rapid battery drain that disappeared when I disconnected alternator, side connector, black and red wire. Red wire
was battery. Found the problem, it was the alternator. Voltage regulator, the diode(s) were faulty. Store this knowledge away - it can happen to you!!
Incidentially, my alternator rebuilder had interesting comments when I picked up the alternator. This alternator had never been disassembled. He could tell by non-sealed vs. sealed bearings. He knew the vehicle was "old" by the model of the unit. I told him it was a 77 Vette. From the condition of the alternator he guessed the mileage to be about 60,000, it was really worn but still "alternating". Mileage is 68,000 - a sharp man, indeed.

Good find! Funny, now that I think about it, I quit having battery drain problems after I switched out my alternator. Probably the same thing was wrong with mine!
Something else for me to file away for future reference. Ain't this forum great?
