Default Pinging

Have a 78 with 385 fast burn , denso iridium plugs, new wires hell engine only has 2000 miles. I get pinging at accell but not all the time. My initial is 32 degrees. The springs are the heavy silver ones. Running holly 650 with mechanical secondaries. I will have more info later but my question is how much vaccuum advance should I see on this gm crate motor. Thanks Dave

You have way too much initial advance in the distributer. Set it at 12 to 18 degrees BTDC.

Don't use vaccum advance on a 385FB (or other crate engine)!
Gm deliver HEI with too light module vaccum advance! so you will have too much advance!
if you want to run with Vaccum advance, you need to swap it with an adjustable unit and tune it!

OK recieved adjustable vacuum kit from crane today. I set up timing with the lightest spring and 32 degrees timing and ran car with vacuum can plug and had no pinging. Hooked up can and wow what a noise. Pinging big time so started backing out adjustment. It took 12 turns before pinging stopped which I belive is max adjustment. So I ended up with 32 degree total timing and 50 degrees max with advanced hooked up. Sound good. Dave
