Started out as a minor red spot on the garage floor. Now it;s a small puddle overnight. I changed the fluid, screen and new gasket. Still leaks!!, and not from the pan. It seems to be dripping somewhere down along side of the auto shifter mechanism. The tranny shifts without problems. How should I stop this leak? Any info would help. L8TER, Paul.
Another very common point of leakage is the seal where the shift linkage rod extends from the trans case. With the right puller tool, it is a cheap & easy fix. A trans shop should be able to do it real quick.
Lucky me I have it leaking at both spots. Bummer. I changed the tail seal twice before I noticed the cable area was really leaking. That’s what I get for assuming stuff.
I just replaced the selector shaft seal on my 81 a couple days ago. Had to get the seal from local Chevy dealer ($4.50). This is not covered in the shop manual, but I found a Haynes GM Auto Trans book which covers all seal replacements. I didn't have the removal tool, but you can carefully pick/pry it out with a pick or very small screwdriver. You have to be real careful not to gouge the opening. You can clean it out, put some ATF fluid on the seal and use an appropriate size socket to tap the new one in. You also have to make sure that the rubber inside portion of the seal is properly seated on the shaft. It fixed my leak. Local tranny shop wanted $75 to replace it including new fluid, filter and pan gasket. It is a little tight working on it since the exhaust pipe is right next to it. Good luck [IMG][/IMG] :chevy
i had had the same prob with a weird leak mine was coming from the dipstick tube so i bought an aftermarket one it still leaked so i finally got clued in on a different dipstick tube its out of late model camaro it had a rubber gromet that was separate from the tube it slide into the tranny a turbo 350 and then the dipstick slide into it and it FINALLY fixed my problem...... so if the shifter stuff doesnt help try this it will cost you about $28.00 :flag
I've got some great fixes offered by experienced guys!! Thanks!! As soon as my shark gets home from paint, I'll jack her up and crawl under to attempt it. Probably after I re-install all the mouldings, lights, bumpers, ect. back onto the body. Yea, I also agree with Smokehouse. 75 bucks not to crawl under no-mans land is well worth it. I recall changing the tranny pan filter/gasket. Now I know what Dextron II tastes like. :U
