I just recently bought a 79 L82 for 5K. It's in pretty good shape with
90K on it but it does have some issues. Can anyone tell me why when I press the gas at 70 mph the motor starts to cut out and when I let off it returns to normal. This only seems to happen when I get up to 70mph.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the Vette. With a car that old and that mileage, a thurogh tuneup would be in order. As stated above it could be youe vac adv can, or a bunch of other stuff. A simple test on the vac can is to disconnect it with the engine running, the engine should slow down. I would look into new plugs, cap, rotor, maybe wores depending on what they look like. Get the advance setup correctly and make sure the distributor is right, it may be worn and need some work. Excessive play in the bushings and drive gear will make the timing unstable. Worn fly weights will also affect advance operation. Once all that is fixed up the carb needs to be gone thru and verified or rebuilt. There is a member here, Lars, he is the Carb guru, contact him about rebuilding your carb and distributor.

Hate to say it but you got an L82 (nice option) for $5k for a reason and you're now realizing the reason. What others suggested is good. My suggestion is to go through entire vehicle, motor, brakes, steering, spend a couple thousand and get it road worthy. Than you'll truly enjoy it. You can do it yourself and save $ or find a local reputable firm and pay more.

folks here are greater when owners take on those responsibilites themselves...your choice which way to proceed.

but welcome to forum from a 78 L82 owner with 56k and in need of much mechcanical attention.

Thanks for the info. I would rather do the work myself but a year ago I had back surgery and ended up with permanent nerve damage so my ability is limited. The previous owner was restoring the vehicle and finished a lot of the work. It is currently road worthy but there are some small issues to get it running tip top so those are he things I would like to do myself. I do appreciate any help I can get. Thanks again.

I pulled the vac hose and the engine did slow down, does that mean that the vac advance is ok? I plan on doing a tune up and have a question about the spark plugs, do you have to get under the vehicle to reach them?

Is it speed or rpm related? What happens if you get on the gas in a lower gear with the engine at the same rpm as it is at 70 mph in high gear?

Well, lets just say that changing the plugs in a 79 Stock L-82 is not the easiest thing to do. Myself, Bullshark and a couple others spent a couple of hours changing the plugs in mine and these guys are not slouches. Yes for underneath, but you may be able to gain access through a wheel well..............GOOD LUCK..LT

Thanks for the tip. All of the older cars I have worked on had a lot more room under the hood. I have always wanted a Vette and this is my first so I'm looking forward to learning somthing new. Thanks again.
