Default speedometer doesn't work

The speedometer works with a drill attached at the transmission end, so I pulled out the gear in the tranny. The gear was badly worn and meshed over at one point. I bought a new gear and put it in, went for a ride and the speedometer still doesn't work. I assume that means that something futher in the tranny needs replacing. Guess if I really want to know how fast I'm going I'll have to take apart the tranny, but I'm not sure how much needs to come apart. Anyone have any ideas??

The transmission will have to come out in order to remove the tailshaft and figure out what happened to your drive gear-if it is the problem. Sometimes the drive gear can shift on the output shaft causing it to not mesh with the driven gear, but since there are several combinations of drive and driven gears make sure you've gotten the right one(s).

If you have a 4 speed use this gear holder inplace of the aluminum one. Also when your spinning with the drill pull the cable out with the drill and see if the speedo stops working.Sometimes if the cable is slightly short it comes out of the back of the speedo head and rounds off on the end.Do you have cruise? Make sure the transducer is not locked and stripped.
