23 South going home yesterday was stopped so i did A u turn and went back to the last road and went cross country to get home anyway when i whipped it around ( the tranny Had done it A couple days before too)it reveved up to 4500 rpm and it felt like a crocidile was grabing the car and trying to turn it over .The fluid is old but red its up to the level on the stick and it works great in all other gears . So can the bands be tightened or something .Should I change the filter & fluid again 44k miles and changed the filter at 39 k.HELP
What transmission do you have? Were you in high gear? Assuming your fluid level is full I would first pull the pan and inspect to see if you find metal shavings or chunks of fiber from the bands or clutches and if its clean I would change filter and fluid and try it again. But honestly it acts like possibly a pump or torque convertor problem.
the tranny is the th 400 slipping and grabbing just when I floor it in first gear (it did not do this before last week ) I did run the engine and tranny alot higher RPM than I normally do I thought this 400 was bullit proof? The car has been garaged the last 15 Yrs and the guy that owned it only drove it 3000 miles in 15 yrs. so could one of the seals be going bad?Ive beebn driving it for A year and have put 300 miles on the car and it ran fine and really still does unless I do A funny car take off.
I think the Band (there is only 1) is engaged in 2nd gear. Generally a Torq converter either works or it doesn't.
(I am softning you up for the bad news)
So it sounds like the first gear clutch in the tranny slipping. That means a tranny tear down
Six footer thats what I was feared . Better to get it done than think I could go for A long cruise or something and break down in the process.
Lon, rather than redo that tranny, you much further down the road for cruising, by putting a 200 4r tranny in there for the overdrive...it's nearly a bolt in swap...only thing you need is a thm350/200/700 vette yoke...common enough item...
you be much happier with it, unless you got over 500 ft lbs of torque....
Thats a killer Idea you got there Thats why this forum rocks I would never have really even thought of doing that. Is Cross over the same? and the tranny mounts spedo drive and everything ?About how much do they cost and where does everyone get em? Thanks again.
