I think mine just unplugged along the harness somewhere by the alternator. It didn't work, so I did some surgery and cleaned and painted it, works fine now. When you take it apart, shake the mercury switch, if it rattles it should be good

Mine is working, I think. It stays on till you almost shut the hood then it goes out. Like the refrig. Ya never know if its out? I guess it always has power to it and then when it alomost closes it loses its ground? Im not sure.. But i didnt see the plug by the alt??? Am i missing something? I want to clean it up and reinstall....What color did you paint yours?? This one is chrome but its rusted wont clean up.. My car is red and black int. maybe black?

the connector is buried in there about next to the alternator. The mercury switch actually connects power to the lamp when you tilt the light up off horizontal. If its not going off you can adjust the bracket a bit. I blasted mine and then painted the inside silver (bumper chrome in a can) Be sure the ground on the light bracket is good when you put it back together

If it's an early 77, there should be a connector near the firewall, sort of hidden under the brake booster. I'm not sure about the late 77, I've never paid too much attention to the later wiring diagrams. It seems like the light connects in a different spot, but I'm not positive.

It took some looking but I figured out how to get the mercury lamp on my 82 apart. The base of the assmbly has black plastic. There is a small metal ring encircling the assembly. That keeps it together. Take that off (carefully so you can reuse it) then you will be able to get to the mercury capsule and contacts. I cleaned my contacts then put back together. Works perfectly now. Initially I was looking for plugs or other contacts......found none.

Sounds like you have the early 77 wiring - it should just be a tap connector. If you can get your hands on the connector, it should snap apart.
