I've put a few posts up here in the past few days, and all the responses have been very helpful. I've got a daunting problem thought. I've got a 79, and my block (and heads) is orange-I've been told it should be blue. Also, its devoid of all its emissions controls, has no Y pipe collecter, and really doesn't look like a 79 engine should. I was wondering if someone can help me decipher my engine block numbers:
1st Row: V O(D?) 6 O(D?) 5 Z A H
2nd Row: 19S439511
Any help or feedback I can get would be great.
I don't have the info in front of me, but I'm pretty sure ZAH is a correct code for a '79 L-48. My car has the original engine and I believe it's a ZAH block. It is painted blue and is a May 1979 Car.
Your engine appears to be original. Codes are as follows:
V Flint, Michigan Engine Assembly Plant
0605 Assembly Date (June 5)
ZAH correct for L-48 with automatic transmission
Second stamp is the code for Bowling Green and your VIN.
The June 5 assembly date on the engine should predate your Time/Build date by anywhere from two to six weeks. Engines were always built and shipped to St. Louis before the cars were assembled.
