Default water pump and coolant help needed

Does anyone have any sugguestions. 72 454, new edelbrock water pump about 1 year ago. The other day I took a quick trip around the block and when I got back antifreeze was running out of the overflow. I checked the hoses and the hose from radiator to manifold was very hard to squeeze. When I opened radiator cap to let out pressure the coolant shot out. Thought thermostat might be bad so I pulled it out, ran the car again, and the same thing happened. I turned on the heater and warm is there. Could this be water pump? Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

You didn't mention the water temp. Head gasket leak will contribute to the condition you have.

Sounds like a simple case of overfilling the system. The coolant level should be about 2" below the filler cap.
