Ok this is where I am at. All of the interior is out including the dash, windows door panels etc. The motor and trannie are out. The suspension rebuild front and rear is almost finished and the engine bay is painted ,along with detailing the fender wells. There is a coat of primer on the car now but still needs to be wet sanded. All bumpers, emblems and weather stripping are off. So at what stage should I say ok lets send it to the paint shop? Also should the doors, deck lid, wiper and headlight doors be removed?
Talk with your paint shop in detail. If you are having it painted in metalic, the shop may want the parts in place to avoid any potential shading problems from spraying parts independently. Also, if your having a shop paint your car, you may have them do a check coat and block sand the car one more time for you and if any wave, low or high areas are discovered, you could exercise the option to reowrk the spot(s) yourself and try again. I'd surely recommend paying them to check your work. A small investment in the big scheme of things.
What color is it going to be?
Good luck and please post pics of the engine compartment.
I say do it before the interior, but after the engine is back in. Because if you leave the interior out, they will probably be happier with the jambs being easier to mask off...also, they will remove the sill plates and door panels anyway, and then you risk them messing them up because they don't know how they come off(I had this problem). Also, you want to do it after the engine is in there because I don't think anyone wants a V-8 dangling over their freshly painted car...also you leaning in the engine bay, and getting greese on the fenders, might mess up some fresh paint
Complete your suspension rebuild. Swap the engine and tranny back in. This will allow you to drive the car to the paint shop plus get these chores out of the way without whacking up the new paint. Leave the interior out. Complete your prep for paint and have the color coats applied. Once the paint has cured, reinstall the interior. If you are not changing colors, it isn't necessary to remove the deck lid, headlights, or wiper door. If you are changing color, then you may want to consider it. Talk to your painter and determine how much of the prep he feels would be okay for you to do. Listen to what he says. You're paying for his expertise. Ain't nobody happy if the painter ain't happy. :)
