Default Speedo Grommet

My first Corvette so sorry if this is a stupid question. Bought a 71 matching numbers coupe last summer. It is in decent condition and I plan on keeping it in driver condition. After doing some minor repairs the other day I noticed the speedometer cable grommet was gone (lots of hot air in the cabin). Picked up a new grommet, but how on earth do you get the new cable through the grommet? I tried the tranny end and that is a "no go". Is the end that connects to the speedo head a more reasonable size? Again sorry if this is dumb ?

That can be a tricky item to install. Yes, the speedo end is smaller and does not have the nut on it. You can snake your arm behind the dash and disconnect the cable from the speedo. Pull it through the firewall, add the gromment, push it back through and reconnect to the speedo. Not fun, but can be done.

This is what I'd do. It may not be absolutely stock this way, but most grommets are installed like this.
