I have a 1977 Vette with an L-48 engine. I want to upgrade the intake and do away with the EGR. What Intake would you recommend. I'd like to keep the Q-jet that I am using now, woud blocking the EGR work?
If not, what combination of Intake and Carb would you recommend. Problem is, I need a combo that will still clear the stock hood.
Use an Edelbrock Performer manifold (without EGR) with your stock Q-jet. Got that combo on my 78' and it clears the hood just fine with the stock air cleaner.
The Performer is a very good intake to use. You can use square bore or spread bore carbs with it. Get the version without EGR and you can take off the other smog controls as well and your car will run better.
You are kind of restricted what intakes to get that won't cause hood clearance problems. Some options are the Edelbrock Performer Q-Jet which is optimized for use with a Quadrajet. The Performer EPS if you want to switch to a square bore carburetor like the Edelbrock line.
In all honesty, your best overall carb choice for a street carburetor is to stick with your Q-jet...if it needs to be rebuilt, do so and you won't regret it.
Just pull the vacuum hose off the ERG and the EGR will be disabled and not working antmore. Don't forget to plug the now unattached vacuum hose. No need to go to a new intake manifold ---- you'll just be spending money for nothing as there will be no noticable increase in performance with a new intake manifold(ask me how I know)
As with many 'performance upgrades' simply changing your intake manifold will not make any appreciable or noticeable change in performance, especially at low rpm's. One thing that many aftermarket speed parts manufacturers conveniently fail to mention in their advertising is the rpm range that the greatest horsepower gains are made from whatever it is that they are selling; so when they say "GUARANTEED THIRTY HP INCREASE!!" chances are that said increase is at 6000 rpm when what you really wanted was a noticeable torque gain at around 3000-4000 rpm. If all you want is to replace that butt-ugly stock intake with a non-egr lightweight aluminum piece Weiand's #8004 has a mount flange that fits your spreadbore and it's just about the cheapest intake out there.

All great advise. I have no problems with my Q-jet. I have a Carter Competion+ AFB carb I took off a Trans Am I once had, a great carb but I don't think it is any better then Q-jet. I realize I wont be getting that much power gain, just wanted to remove the EGR and some of the polished intakes look good.
Thanks for all the advise on here. It's good to have a place to go to with questions.
