Default Brake Fluid?????

I have a 78 and the brake pedal recently feels a little mushy. I do not see any visible leaks, but I took the top off the master cylinder and noticed the fluid was down about 1/4". What type of fluid should I use to fill the master cylinder?

If the resevoir is down in fluid there are only two reasons:

1. Leaking fluid
2. Worn pads creating a long throw of the piston, using more fluid.

If you arbitrarily add fluid and then later replace your brake pads you must compress your calipers which will force brake fluid out of your master cyclinder. It creates an unwanted mess.

To answer the actual question Valvoline Synpower is great stuff.

However, the brake fluid will drop as the pads wear.
don't add fluid untill you change pads.

Well unless you have a leak. Then fix the leak and then add fluid...

..
Dot 3 = 370 degree boiling point Dot 4 = 420 degree. The syn power is 500 degree.

Brake fluid absorbs water over time. I would drain the old stuff an replace it. I had been using the synpower for many years.

Thanks for the info. I will check the brake pads and look for any leaks. I thought someone told that the calipers have 2 bleeders on each, is this true?

Yes, it is good stuff compatable. years ago I did the silicone and had to do the total flush. I went back to syn power when I did all four calipers and rotors. Now I use 600 degree racing stuff. Syn is like $7.00 per qt. 600 deg. is more like $40. I only get about two sets of carbon metalic pads before the rotors are gone also

I have a vacuum bleeder and one qt can replace the whole system even with squishing out all the pistons
