Tubular versus Solid Sway Bar?

Tubular versus Solid Sway Bar?
The sway bar bushings on my 77 are toast. Was looking at a new sway bar and was wondering what the difference was between a "tubular" versus "Solid" sway bar.
What size is appropriate? 1 inch, 1-1/8, or 1-1/4, or 1-3/8?
I am not going to autocross, but don't like driving a boat either...
