i am looking at a 72 lt1 corvette. it has the correct block but not sure about the heads. does the lt1 use double hump heads? the markings on the heads on the car look like the top of a crown with 3 points. what should they look like? i know they use 3998916 heads but i dont know what the markings look like. can anyone help?
If you go to www.ncrs.org and click on the store web site you can buy the 1970-72 Judging Guide. I am pretty sure that there is a drawing in there showing the head diagrams. A valuable reference source too.
Pop the oil fill cap and check and see if you can read the casting #'s on the head. Its been awhile, but I think you can read them w/a flashlight thru the hole.

You can check the driver side head by looking thru the valve cover oil fill hole and you should be able to see the push rod guide plates.
My 72 LT-1 has the later heads:
Driver’s side head - 39733487 X 02 2 guide plates visible.
If I'm reading this correct, the NCRS judging manual list 3973487 X, 3998916 and 3998993 for the base and LT-1. The 3973487 X are on later build date cars.
