Have this annoying sound that seems to be coming from passenger side real wheel or that area. The best I can describe it is a tink tink noise when coming to a stop. All u-joints have been checked, new oil and additive in rear end. Emergency brake checked. Its driving me crazy and I can't figure it out. Anyone have any ideas???
Had car in shop on lift. They told me that they had done pretty much what you just suggested. They couldn't get her to make that noise rotating the rear wheels. Wthout actually removing bearing they felt it was in good shape--no noise and spun freeley forwards and backwards. Only hear this noise on passenger side rear so I'm taking for granted its coming from the wheel area.
That too was done while at the shop. Very fustrating on trying to narrow this one down. Tonight I'll have the wife drive the car and run along side while slowing and brakes being applied. Maybe I can narrow its location down more.
What type of wheels do you have? I had the same issue on a 77 with ralley wheels. Turns out that one of the clips on the trim ring was deformed and didn't grip the wheel tightly. On each revolution the sidewall of the tire would flex and cause the clip to move on the wheel making a squeaking sound. If you have ralleys, pull off the trim ring and see if it squeaks.
Tink, tink noise? Past experience tells me you have a U joint dry, or going bad...one of the six on the drive shaft or half shafts....I remember this noise from the past and as I recall, new U's stopped the tink....my 2 cents
Here's the latest. After going for a drive last night I walked along side car while wife would come to a stop trying to pin-point noise. Had her do this several times. Come to find out will get this same noise when shifting from drive to reverse and visa-versa. Never realized this before, only time it would be in reverse is when backing out of garage and nothing heated up. Only get this noise after car has been driving for short time. Sounds like its coming from suspension or rear end on pass side and not the wheel. When the car squats or lifts when being shifted will get this noise at a dead stop. Tried looking under car while wife would shift back and forth but could not isolate problem. I trust my wife but not enough to lay under car while its running and she's shifting from drive to reverse. Just guessing here but when brakes are applied when coming to a stop body weight would shift forward and would produce this sound. Looks like the only way to isolate is to have it on a lift and somebody shifting back and forth. I should have mentioned this on my first post. It's a 82 with a fiberglass mono-leaf spring.
Noise is a distinct tink-tink when shifting to reverse. Car seems to do a double squat. One squat per tink. (Got to love this Hi Tech vocabulary)
All u-joints have been checked as per shop but will have them double check again while its in the air.
