The speedometer cable on my 75 coupe has a squeeking sound that is very annoying. Should I try to lube it with the grease gun adapter or is it very difficult to replace with a new cable?
I have the same problem with my '76. What is the easiest way to get to the cable; removing all the crap from underneath or removing the dash pad (if it's accessible that way.)

I had (still have) the swooshing sound from mine as welll ('76). I removed the dash pad, actually dropped it down while I had the steering column out and changed the dash lights. I also removed the cable from the housing and used graphite. I just put a bunch in my hand and feed the cable back down in the housing while running the cable through the graphite in my hand. It lowered the swooshing sound a bunch but not totally....
BTW, I have pictures of the dash pad dropped, the speedo cable, the head light switch, the dash lights...etc. if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the input. Pulling the dash pad out is labor intensive, at least the time I did it on my '75. Everyone says it's easy to lube the speedo cable but I have yet to have anyone on the forum to describe this "easy" repair.

Undo the cable at the transmission. Pull out the core. Clean it. Smear red grease on it. Slide it back in. 15 minute job tops.

Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't believe you can remove the cable from the tranny end because the opposite end which goes into the speedo head has an something attached to it to keep it in place and prevents one from pulling the cable out from the tranny end. Please correct me if I'm wrong but every GM car I've worked on is like this. Thanks for the input.

it's pretty easy imo. remove the a/c duct work, reach under and unclip the cable from the speedometer, pull it out through the fire wall from under the hood, unhook it from the transmission - reverse to install.
i'm not sure about a '75, but would guess it's somewhat similar.

Thanks. I'll give that a try, but I think I tried that route several years ago and still couldn't reach the cable connector.
