Default 1981 Axle-shaft UJs

I started to remove my axle-shaft UJs at the weekend, & noticed the new ones I got from Ecklers (part# A7142) are a different size. The bearing caps on the old ones are 30mm diameter, but 27mm on the new ones. The Ecklers description says they're suitable for "1980-81 Axle Shaft With Automatic Transmission", which should fit as the car's a 1981 auto.

Ecklers aren't replying to my emails (no surprise there then), so I thought I'd check with you knowledgeable lot. The new UJs came in a box marked McQuay-Norris with 2 numbers on the side - U1203 & XF1203. There's also a lable stuck on (presumably by Ecklers) which says A7142 - U-Joint, Shaft, 63-81.

I'm wondering if Ecklers have stuck the wrong label on the boxes, or all 4 labels & boxes are right but have the wrong UJs in. The only other option is my car's got non-standard drive-shafts & yolks, which seems highly unlikely.

Any ideas? I'm in the UK, so had to pay a lot of postage + import duty & tax on these. I don't suppose Ecklers will refund that assuming they sent me the wrong parts.

Cheers, Preston.

I'd try and obtain replacements on your side of the pond, U-joints can't be unique to America. Take one down to an autoparts store and see if they can match it, we measure ours in inches.

You need the A7170.Some of the 81 autos came with the larger U-joint maybe it follows the performance rear end.Call Ecklers and tell them to send a call tag and have them picked up and send the correct ones.

Hi, I went through all this when I changed my UJ's. They're different sizes, depending on whether auto or manual trans, which can cause some confusion. I can't remember the part numbers but I'll have a look tonight to see if I've still got the boxes or a receipt for them.
If you don't get anywhere with Ecklers you could try Corvette Kingdom in Norfolk for a set.

I just did mine this weekend (all 6). Mine is a 76 auto and NAPA had really nice "PRECISION" joints made by federal-mogul (sp?) USA with grease zerks and retainers. All 6 for like $76.

They also had the asian version for the same price and 1/2 the quality- look at the box!

ECKLERS is good for some things but their prices usually SUCK. Especially when it something you can get at napa~ Good luck
