My tach filter is shot on my '76 L82. What does this item do; filter the signal to the tach or noise suppression? Can I bypass it and wire it straight or do I have to have this filter? They cost $30 and I dont want it on unless it is an important part..
I would suggest you replace it as GM put it there for a reason, to filter electrical spikes. If they could have saved the cost times a few 100K cars, they would have. I know many people have bypassed it and have not had issues, but again it was originally there for a reason.
BTW, the filter is just two resistors and two capacitors. You can build your own for a couple bucks worth of radio shack parts. It won't look original, but will serve the purpose. Here is a schematic:
Here's a pic of one I've built for a few forum members.
Electrically its the same as the original but if you construct your own I suggest you mount it under the dash in the tach line vs the original intake manifold location just to better protect it from the harsher underhood environment.

Your thoughts please.. Thanks
you will need the filter or run the risk of burning
out the unit.
if your not 100% original under the hood
forum member "ACECO" (George) makes a replacement that can be wired in using the
plug ends off of your old one and hidden very
easily.
no one has spotted mine yet

Good Luck!
Thanks, I thought if it was just for noise suppression, I'd loose it. I listen to side pipes- not the radio!
I like the though of a the one you make, Newer technology / parts. How much and how can I get one. PM me if needed. Thanks again !
