I'm just lovin my 81 two tone silver/blue vette. While detailing the interior, I noticed something I didn't pick up when I bought the car. My tach is working fine however I noticed it says "Cross Fire Injection" ignition RPM X100
at the bottom of the guage. I thought the cross fires didn't come out until a year later in '82. Does this mean my tach was replaced or could my '81 be a later procuction model and the factory installed this tach due to supply reasons? What do your folks think? Thanks for the feed back :smash:
I guess it's possible, but the most likely scenario is that your tach failed under warranty and the dealer replaced it with the then currently available tach, which was an 82 Crossfire tach.
I have a very late 76, just over 1000 cars behind it on the line, and I have found that many parts are from the 77 year. This could be what happened with your car as well. Take a look at your vin and see what the number of your car is, subtract that from the total number made in the 81 production year. Also go to the trim tag located on the front inside door jamb drivers side. There is a code there consisting of a letter and a number that tells the month and day that your car was born. These 2 pieces of information can help to tell you where your car was on the assembley line. You may have a very late 81 where some of the parts were actually from an 82. All of this is helpful for getting parts in the future, knowing if it is an early or late model.
Hope that helps,
