Default Heater core seal question

I just installed a new heater core in my '69 and, like an ***, I forgot to reinstall the thick foam rubber seal that goes around the heater core tubes that the heater hoses connect to.
Of course I didn't notice this until the whole damn thing was buttoned up on the firewall.
My question to you guys is, how important is that seal? Under normal circumstances I would remove the heater box and install the foam seal but, I have already had to remove this damn thing once for another idiotic mistake and I had to order more seal tape for the heater cover.
If this seal isn't absolutely necessary I think I am going to leave it out and save the seal for another time when I am more energetic.

So; is this seal absolutely necessary or can I leave it out and install it later, like sometime in the winter?

squirt a little red silicone (or any heat type) in it from the underside, you'll be OK..

I bought a can of the foam insulation sealer at Home Depot and used it from under the car to seal around the heater hoses connections. Then I sprayed it with black spray paint.

I got to thinking about this some more and think I am going to bite the bullet while the interior is torn apart and rip the heater box off the firewall and install that foam seal. I am afraid that the bracket that secures the heater core to the heater core box may wear a hole in the heater core without this foam seal to provide some cushion.

I appreciate the suggestions on how to make the current situation work but, I think it would bother me the whole time I was driving the car until I got it taken care of properly.

Maybe this time I will be able to install this damn thing and be done with it.

Try the black butyl that comes in a "winshield installation kit", made by 3M. It's very sticky and adhears to itself, metal, plastic and anything that's not oily. It's very stretchy and easy to work into areas of odd shapes. Pep Boys should have it. It's in a roll and is about 1/2" dia. x 8' long. It's handy for all kinds of stuff.

Wow, I wish I had known about that before ordering another seal kit for $25.00. Oh well, live and learn..........
