Default Auger mufflers (Speedway)

My mufflers came in yesterday, and they are very tight in the side tubes...to the point that it looks like it's going to take a piece of wood and a hammer to push them into place. Do I need any extra retention to keep them from rattling during expansion and cooling, or will the tight fit hold them in position?

yes weld a little tab on the ends and use a 1/4 x20 bolt through the tube on back side so you dont see them.Mine would rattle after hot but bolted both ends and it worked fine no rattles, sounds great too.

I just 'press fit' mine with a 5lb hammer, no rattles.

The tab would be good insurance though

I hammered mine in and weled the end so they couldn't slide around, now my passenger side is rattleing took it three whole years to get to that point. I had several people think my car was falling apart on power tour this year. I didn't have time to slice open the back of the pipe and weld the augers to the sides. I really need to do that soon, its really starting to sound bad.

batman, the augers are one of the many sistems i've tried along a few months to try find the perfect compromise beetwin flow and decent sound...my opinion is thet they're bad flowers (at least for my engine) they killed its breathing capabilities when at over 5.000 rpm

I've had my 77 around 5k once...it sounded like the entire car was going to fly apart.

..my '77 ,with the stock engine, used to fall apart already at 4.000rpm, without even needing the augers

If you didn't run into trouble until 5k with the auger mufflers, I think they'll be fine for my street car.

Are you mounting your pipes along the bottom of the doors or straight up behind the cab.

i run them in my 4 inch sidetubes, i welded steel dowel all the way around the first and last augger for a tight fit. Then tapped them in tight then bolted them in place.I also capped the centers hole in them but might remove it.

I don't weld, so that's not an option for me

I saw were one guy welded each spiral together as one long insert. Not sure if that will help, but the tab idea seems like a good fix.

For sidepipes they are about as good as you can get.
For undercar, there are much better options.

I run the 3.5" versions with the center tube wide open. I have noticed some improvement with the mufflers off but except for open tubes or glass packs there isn't much choice.
