Default Suspension Questions

I have a 1972 that has significant vibration in the front suspension at speeds of 55 and above. The car hops and vibrates (wheels are balanced and alignment is fine). The car went through a restoration in 1990, and since then no real work has been done to the suspension. Two questions: has anyone experienced this type of vibration before and if so would you let me know what the problem was (bushings, springs, shocks, etc) and can anyone recommend a shop in Atlanta, GA that is qualified to assist with identifying/fixing the problem (not Tom Jumper). Given the age of the suspension and its various components I would not be adverse to installing a new suspension package (like one offered at YearOne complete with monospring) and would appreciate if anyone has any thoughts on available suspension (front and rear) packages. This is a small bloc car. Thanks. Rich

Before going into the suspension, you could still have something going on with your tires. Have you made a visual inspection of them lately? Any abnormal wear patterns or sidewall irregularities? How old are they? (Sometimes, wierd things happen inside tires as they age...) How long ago was your balance done and by what method? (The old bubble is still best.)

Next, I'd check to see if something might have found it's way into a rotor which could be creating an imbalance. Odd, but I've seen it more than once.

Beyond that, from the sounds of things, you'll likey find at least one component in need of replacement in your suspension, whether directly contributing to this problem or not. Jack it up and check for slop in your spindle bearings, ball joints, tie-rods, idler... All the rubber bushings probably need to be replaced, too, preferably with poly.

Check VBP's packages out. Many satisfied customers. And adding a set of Bilsteins is highly recommended.

Hope that helps some. Best of luck finding a shop that still understands the C3.

If you haven't already, find a shop with a Hunter GSP9700 road force balancer. I bet you have a bad spot in a tire.
