Default Back from the track.

well im back from the track after testing my new team G intake. i dont know what to make of it. the car was consistantly faster then before except i would have thought there would be more gain because i have to lauch it harder and i have to shift it later. before, i used the edelbrock performer RPM and consistantly got 13.0-13.1s at 103 (with a few 12.98s @ 103) lauching the car at 1800 and shifting at 5800. the new intake wont even leave without lauching it above 2000rpm. it will just bog out. and the power comes in later.
Today with the team G, the first 3 runs were 12.910 @105.93, 19.94 @105.27, 12.92 @105.69. so it is quicker. but dont you think that with a 2-3 mph gain on the top end i should have seen a little bit more difference? what i mean is that the sixty foot was the exact same as the previous trip to the track and the 1/8 mile was the exact same as before, so if nothing was lost from before and i gained 2-3 mph should i have seen a tenth difference or more?

anyway here is my main concern. on the last run (run #5 of the day) i had my best ever 60 foot of 1.816. a best ever 330' of 5.307 and a second best ever 1/8th of 8.251. but on the top end of the track something happened. i ended up with a 13.090 @ 100.51 mph. it seemed like i was surging on the top end. right before i got to 6000rpm in second gear it was like i had run out of gas or had some sort of ignition problem. this has been happening for a while. what is it?

my last questions is how safe is to rev a stock shortblock 350 to 6600rpm every shift? for the car to run like it was to day i had to shift at 6300rpm every gear and lauch the car at 2500rpm. this cant be good for a stock tranny and motor. what do you think is safe?

What your seeing on the ET, is a loss of low end torque and power, this is what normally happens when switching from a dual to a single plane, the extra hp is coming up higher which makes up for the loss of the low end so the ET's are staying fairly consistent to where you were before. Your deffinitly making more power, but as with most things with an engine you have to sacrifice something to get it. An easier way to think about what has happened is to consider your entire 1/8 mile pass as a whole and average the amount of power across the entire 1/8mile, it's probably about the same average as it was with the old intake and your picking up the mph and a slightly better ET at the end of the track where the single plane really starts to shine. A steeper set of gears would offset the loss in low end and you'll probably then pick up the ET your looking for. An L-82 might be able to stand that kind of RPM but I think it's pushing it, with an L-48 I think it would be awfully scary. I'm no expert here but from my limited racing experience that's what I'm seeing. As far as the surging on the top end, how was your fuel level at the time? if it was really low you may have introduced some air into the system especially with a hard launch, just an idea.

just wanted to add a note. i didnt even get a chance to check the plugs yet, nor have i had a chance to change the timing at all. there could be more in it. i hope. anyway, with the motor having to rev higher, do you think the timing would have to come down a bit to work properly?

I thought all along that you had a ZZ4. You're running a L48 to 6600?

I asked a similar question before and got responses back saying 6000 rpm max. I had previously used 5500 rpm as max shift point.

Sounds like you are experiencing fuel problems on the top end. Still using a stock pump?

 Happy to see a L48 in the 12s

Gotta get some o2 sensors this winter and install them. I have read your article many times and want to do this. What sensor should I get. It is easiest for me to put it in the collector so a heated one should be the right setup. Is there a number or certain one to get.

Vetteboy man you got some stones running that motor to 6600 rpm. I would be a little leary of doing this but it seems to be holding together but for how long. Hope to see you at the Challenge on the 10th

Vetteboy, I could leave the Vette home and bring my truck and a trailer. That way, you can get home when that L48 explodes! Just kidding, I hope...
