Im driving a 71 corvette with a world engines all aluminum 509 with a 6 speed richmond manuel transmission.. so far so good.. But my exhaust system is not noisy enough in my opinion.. corvette's with that many cubes need to be heard.
So i would like for you to post some suggestions on what my new exhaust system should consist of, and where i can buy it..
at the moment im driving with hooker ceramic coated headders(love them, they look really good and fit really weel) with 2,5" all the way with mufflers in the back where they were originally seated.. tipped off with original square exhaust tips..
Im looking for a noisy setup, that dont make it unbearable to drive more than 10miles in..
Hoping for some answers..
btw, great site, just dicovered it today.. living i dk, copenhagen where corvettes rule, and fords' get their *** kicked
Welcome to the forum. You're going to find no question goes unanswered here. Glad to have you.
Have you considered side pipes?
If you want the dual rears, maybe go up to 3" pipes and a pair of Magna Flows. I have had Magnas on several of my cars and LOVE the deep log gurgle. Plenty loud when I'm goosing the throttle.
Welcome,
hooker side pipes nothig can beat them!
but if yo need under car exhaust go with 2.5 chambered system
but in europe i think you will need muffler not too loud! (don't know dansk rules)

I Love my Hooker Headers/Sidepipes
no mufflers sounds like a shotgun blast on every cyl
Lots of Muffler choices from too Quiet to Too LOUD
Mine are a little to loud and I LOVE it!!
I had thrush sidepipes with some kind of headers (mr gasket I think)installed when I bought the car. Headers started leaking so ripped them out and installed ceramic coated hedman headers and had a custom side pipes made to run through the thrush covers. sounds awesome! forget the cds though, you wont hear them unless you run an amp
This is the perfect system for you. It's a 2 1/2" undercar chambered system that runs from headers/manifolds back. I just put this on my 1981 2 days ago, and it sounds absolutely incredible. It's true dual all the way back, eliminating the catalytic converter, and bolts right in place of the old one. It has two "mufflers" in the middle section, and two small "mufflers" right before the tips. For a system with 4 mufflers, this thing sounds absolutely incredible. At idle, it's got a pronounced "lump". You can definately tell it's running, but it's not too loud. At cruise it's actually somewhat quiet, but once you open it up, it sounds like open headers. I have very weak 8.5:1 compression, and it sounds like a full out race car, so I can't imagine what yours would sound like. It's pretty damn cheap, and comes with all the necesarry hardware. Gotta love MidAmerica!
With as much power as that 509 should be making a 3" system would net you a pretty noticable performance increase. Just about any performance muffler will be plenty loud with 3" pipes.

It is true, they are all loud with a 3 inch system and that is what you need. After trying the Flowmaster and Super Turbos I went back to the MagnaFlows today and I am I happy I did, doesn't sound like someone beating on a tin can anymore, sounds like a real muscle car now, been driving it around all day scaring the ricers, even filled up at the gas station they hang around
Good to see so many replies to my thread.. Thank you. great forum.
The car certainly has a powerful sound at the moment, but not until it reaches 3000rpm.. And the 6speed is quite noisy too.. Having it replaced in a few weeks with a similar one that hopefully isn't as noisy.
Im really thinking about that 2,5" system that guitar crazy posted. sunds like a sweet exhaust system. Not too fond of the flowmaster 40's.. tried them on a 350csb firebird and wasn't amazed allthough alot of people actually talk good about them.. Maybe the compression was simply too low, and the 2 1/4" system too small.
btw, i hate ricers too.. and bmw mercedes and so on... kindda made it m,y hobby to cruise around killing ricers and bmw's.. man it's fun
That 2.5" system from Mid America is what I have...I didnt get the 2 smaller chambered sections in the rear though..just the 2 main sections! Wasnt given the option. I guess it depends on what they have in stock at the time.
With your engine and performance, Im thinking as stated above you want to go with a 3 inch setup.
Just for fun, here is a comparison video I made of the chambered setup on my car.
i love the sound of dynomax ultraflows. sound great at idle, and when you get on the gas, you hear it, but they quiet down well when you're cruising. and the fact that they do all this while outflowing almost any other muffler out there is a plus too.

I am using the 14 inch universals, they are actually a little quieter at idle than the Superturbos but when you get on it they make some sweet music.
I can feel a seat of the pants power gain over the superturbos, must have something to do with the fact that they are straight thru wide open design, I could roll a tennis thru them
If I could offer any advice after having many mufflers on my Vette, MAGNAFLOW sounds the best, period
